American Idol has crowned a new winner, 21-year-old musician Abi Carter from Indio, California. Carter was crowned the winner during the show's finale on Sunday, May 22, 2023, after receiving the most votes from viewers.

Carter's victory marks the first time a woman has won American Idol since Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood. She is also the first winner from California since Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard.

Carter's victory was not without controversy, however. Former judge Simon Cowell, who was one of the three original judges for the first nine seasons of the show, was not present for the finale.
